Cardiff City have announced the re-signing of Calum Scanlon from Liverpool, with the left-back returning to the Bluebirds after his successful loan spell last season.
The 21-year-old has put pen to paper on a season-long loan deal, returning to Cardiff after playing a key role in Brian Barry-Murphy's promotion-winning side during the second half of the 2025-26 campaign.
Key role in promotion push
Scanlon made eight appearances for Cardiff last season, providing back-up for the excellent Joel Bagan as the Bluebirds secured an immediate return to the Championship.
His performances made a small impression in the Welsh capital, however Bluebirds fans will hope to see far more of him and his pace this season as they look to make their mark back in the second tier.
Scanlon delighted to be back
Cardiff have been working to bring him back ever since his loan spell came to an end and now they have got their man.
Scanlon said: “It’s brilliant to be back. It’s great to see all the lads again, speak with the manager and be back in the city. It’s an amazing feeling.
“I’m ready to go. It’s been a positive pre-season getting minutes. It was good for me. My body is ready for the season.
“I’m grateful for the experience I’ve already had here and I can’t wait to make new memories at the Club.”
Boosting left-back options
Scanlon's return is a significant boost for Barry-Murphy, who has been looking to strengthen his options at left-back ahead of Cardiff's return to the Championship.
The Bluebirds have been short of options in the position during the early stages of the campaign, with Bagan having been the main option during pre-season.
Scanlon's arrival gives Cardiff another player who already knows Barry-Murphy's methods and the demands of the manager's system. It also gives him another shot at the Championship after his bright spell with Millwall two seasons ago was cruelly cut short by injury.
It also represents another important piece of business for a Cardiff side that has been relatively slow to add to its squad this summer.
Jack Moylan remains the club's only other outfield signing, with the former Lincoln City midfielder arriving earlier this month.
Cardiff had been keen to add further quality before their Championship opener against Wrexham and Scanlon's return addresses one of the areas that had been identified as needing reinforcement.
