Cardiff City set to sign Man City midfielder Charlie Holt

Cardiff City are set to sign promising Manchester City midfielder Charlie Holt, WalesOnline understands.

The 17-year-old midfielder is viewed as a major coup by Cardiff's recruitment team, who have identified Holt as a player with the potential to develop and increase in value over the coming years.

Holt has been around Cardiff in recent weeks and has even taken part in first-team training sessions, where he has impressed head coach Brian Barry-Murphy and his coaching staff.

New recruitment strategy

The teenager's arrival is another indication of Cardiff's renewed recruitment strategy, with the club increasingly looking to identify young players who can develop within their structure rather than relying solely on more established additions.

Holt is regarded as an accomplished player in possession and has caught the eye during his time training with the first team.

There is also an obvious familiarity between Holt and members of Cardiff's coaching staff. Barry-Murphy and assistant Lee Riley both have close connections with Manchester City's academy setup and possess extensive knowledge of the young talent coming through at the Premier League club.

Academy pathway

Holt has developed through City's academy system and is an England youth international. The midfielder is expected to initially slot into Cardiff's Under-21 side, although the club intend for him to spend significant time training with the senior squad.

The hope is that, like a number of the club's other emerging talents, Holt can eventually force his way into Barry-Murphy's first-team plans. It is another example of Cardiff attempting to build for the future while also creating greater value within their squad.

Holt is an energetic midfielder who is capable of influencing games at both ends of the pitch and has progressed through the age groups at City's academy. He signed his scholarship with Manchester City in June 2025 before stepping up to the Under-18 squad for the 2025/26 campaign.

Relationship with City

Holt made 12 league appearances for City's Under-18s last season and helped Oliver Reiss' side win the Under-18 Premier League North title. Now Cardiff are preparing to bring him into their own academy structure, with the club seeing the teenager as another player who could develop significantly under Barry-Murphy and his coaching staff.

The move also underlines the strength of the relationship between Cardiff and Manchester City's academy. That connection has already proved useful since Barry-Murphy's arrival, with Riley having also moved to south Wales from City's youth setup to join his former colleague.

Cardiff's recruitment operation has increasingly focused on young players with significant development potential, while the club's academy pathway has become an important part of the wider first-team strategy. Cardiff don't simply want to find players who can contribute immediately, but they are looking to identify talent early, develop it within their own environment and ultimately see those players emerge as first-team options or valuable assets. Holt now has the opportunity to become the latest young player to benefit from that approach.
