Bruno Fernandes has described Carlos Baleba as 'young and exciting' after the midfielder completed his move to Manchester United in a deal worth £70 million. The 22-year-old has signed from Brighton for an initial £65m, with a further £5m in add-ons, and has committed to a contract until 2031, with an option to extend for an additional year.
Fernandes impressed by Baleba's qualities
Speaking at the PFA Awards, where he was named the 2026 Players' Player of the Year, Fernandes expressed his enthusiasm for the Cameroon international's arrival. 'He's a very energetic player. Strong physically, he can push us up the pitch driving the ball,' the Portuguese star said. 'Young and exciting, the club have been following him for two years.'
Baleba brings three seasons of Premier League experience to Old Trafford, having joined Brighton from Lille in 2023 for an initial £23.2m. He was heavily linked with a move to Manchester last summer, but a deal was not struck at that time.
Baleba's dream move
The midfielder expressed his delight at completing the transfer, describing it as a dream come true. 'It is an incredible feeling to join the club of my dreams,' said Baleba. 'Playing at Old Trafford is always special but the opportunity to do so as a Manchester United player will be a real honour.'
He also highlighted his eagerness to work with manager Michael Carrick, saying: 'I cannot wait to work with Michael Carrick; his experience and knowledge of the game make him the perfect coach to help me to reach the highest level. The ambition of everyone at the club is extremely clear, the future is hugely exciting, and I am determined to play my part in delivering the success that we are capable of together.'
Midfield revamp continues
Baleba's arrival completes a significant overhaul of Manchester United's midfield this summer, following the signings of Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. Both new additions started alongside Fernandes in the 2-0 defeat at Hull City on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.
Kobbie Mainoo is also in contention for a place in Carrick's midfield, having replaced Tielemans in the second half at Hull.
