Mohamed Salah's potential move to Besiktas has fallen through, with the Turkish club's director claiming they have walked away from negotiations despite multiple meetings with the former Liverpool player.
Besiktas withdraw from negotiations
Salah, 34, became a free agent after leaving Anfield a year before his contract ended. Besiktas had been seen as frontrunners, with club president Serdal Adali previously telling Turkish media they awaited a final decision. However, director Onder Ozen has revealed communications have stalled.
Ozen told Turkish media: "We contacted Salah, this also involved a financing model. Salah is a global star, a respected athlete. We met with Salah three times before the financial part of the negotiations was discussed."
He added: "Up to this point, everything was smooth. When the financial side began, the initial smoothness slowed down from July 21st onwards. Requests began to arrive that would both disrupt the flow of information and create a deadlock in the financial process. I can assume that a respected athlete like Salah was unaware of this."
Final offer remains but no new talks
Ozen stated that Besiktas will not make another offer, saying: "The club has a policy, and it cannot deviate from that policy, our President has very clearly identified his position and has stayed there. I don't have a chance to say yes or no, Besiktas's offer, made under its own terms, is clear. If a response comes to this offer, it can be evaluated. But Besiktas will not make another offer. They said they are also in talks with another club, maybe they will get a result from there. The last offer we made to Salah is the final point that does not harm Besiktas's club identity."
Besiktas have already signed Leandro Trossard from Arsenal as they strengthen ahead of the new season. They last won the Turkish title in 2021, with Galatasaray currently dominant.
Salah's options remain open
Salah is not short of suitors. He has long been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, with Liverpool previously rejecting lucrative offers. The MLS also remains a possibility if the Egyptian wants to end his career in the United States.
