Arsenal's Gyokeres Could Trigger Immediate Payout After Chelsea Fixture
Viktor Gyokeres may force Arsenal into making an immediate financial payout to Sporting CP following this weekend's Premier League clash with Chelsea. The Swedish forward has already activated several performance-related add-ons in his contract, and another substantial payment could be due imminently.
Performance Bonuses and Financial Implications
According to reports from The Sun, Gyokeres' transfer agreement includes a clause requiring Arsenal to pay Sporting CP £437,000 for every 20-goal contribution milestone he achieves. After scoring twice in the recent north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur, Gyokeres has now tallied 15 goals and two assists across all competitions this season.
A hat-trick or three goal contributions in Sunday's match against Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium would trigger this payment, though such a feat would require an exceptional individual performance. The forward has contributed two goals in a single match on six occasions this term, including against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg.
Existing Payments and Future Obligations
Arsenal have already made significant payments to Sporting CP based on Gyokeres' appearances. The club reportedly paid £1.1 million after the striker made his 20th appearance lasting at least 45 minutes, which occurred during the 3-2 victory over Bournemouth.
Sporting will continue to receive this payment after every 20 appearances meeting the minutes-based criteria, up to a total of 80 appearances. By that stage, the Portuguese club will have collected £4.4 million from these appearance-related clauses alone.
Gyokeres has now reached 30 appearances following the north London derby, meaning another payment could materialise before the season concludes if he maintains full fitness.
Additional Financial Commitments
The goal contribution payments represent only part of Arsenal's financial obligations. Sporting CP are also owed £874,000 upon Arsenal securing qualification for next season's Champions League, with this payment set to be made each time the Gunners qualify until it totals £3.5 million over four instalments.
Gyokeres' strikes will cost Arsenal no more than £874,000 in additional goal-related payments, as there is only one further instalment linked to his scoring should he reach 40 goals and assists.
By the end of the current campaign, Gyokeres could have cost Arsenal a total of £3.5 million in additional fees, inclusive of clauses he has already activated. This figure underscores the complex financial structure of modern football transfers and the ongoing financial relationships between clubs long after players have changed teams.
