Bayern Munich legend Thomas Muller has criticised Anthony Gordon's decision to join Barcelona over the German champions. The 24-year-old winger completed a £70 million move from Newcastle United to the Camp Nou last week, despite Bayern also expressing interest.
Muller, speaking to Bild, admitted he could understand the appeal of playing under Barcelona boss Hansi Flick but still questioned Gordon's choice. 'If Barcelona and Bayern come, what was the deciding factor for Gordon not coming to Munich? I know Hansi Flick very well, of course. It's a lot of fun playing under him, both in terms of his leadership and his style of play. But I would go to FC Bayern,' Muller said.
Gordon, who signed a five-year contract with Barcelona, revealed the move fulfilled a childhood dream. 'I wanted to speak Spanish because as a kid I believed I would play for Barça, believe it or not. I was excited to play for Barça when I was three years of age,' he said at his unveiling. He added: 'I found out very late from Barça, but as soon as I knew Barça was a serious option there was never any question. I always wanted Barça. Barça are the biggest club on the planet.'
Bayern had reportedly offered up to £60 million for Gordon, but Newcastle held out for £70 million, which Barcelona matched. The England international, who has 17 caps and two goals for the Three Lions, now turns his attention to the upcoming World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
Gordon enjoyed his most productive season at Newcastle, scoring 17 goals, though nine were penalties. He will aim to make an immediate impact at Barcelona after the international break.
