FIFA has announced that the 2026 World Cup champions will be awarded Super Bowl-style championship rings, marking the first time such a prize has been offered in football's premier tournament. The decision aims to bring an 'iconic American sporting tradition to global football,' according to FIFA.
Details of the Rings
The custom jewellery will feature gold rings topped with blue gems, engraved with the words 'FIFA World Cup 2026 Champions'. One side of the ring will display an image of the World Cup trophy, while the other will feature a custom icon representing the winning team. A total of 2,026 rings will be minted, of which 30 will be presented to the winning team's players and staff, custom-fitted and numbered. The remaining 1,996 rings will be sold to the general public.
Players will receive a temporary replica immediately after the final, which will later be replaced with their personalized ring. This is the first time a championship ring has been awarded to a World Cup winner.
Appealing to American Audiences
The introduction of championship rings is part of FIFA's broader strategy to engage American audiences. This follows the adoption of hydration breaks, which have shifted matches into four quarters instead of two halves, and the inclusion of a half-time show at the final. The 2026 World Cup will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Championship rings are a longstanding tradition in American sports, awarded to winners of the Super Bowl, Stanley Cup, and other professional leagues, as well as at youth and amateur levels.
