Newcastle United fans should be excited about a new-look side this season, but must trust Eddie Howe to get the best from the signings made this summer, according to Pat Nevin.
Financial forced sales
The Magpies have sold Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon in big-money deals, while Kieran Trippier left at the end of his contract. Captain Bruno Guimaraes has also been linked with a move away, leaving some fans concerned about the squad's lack of experience.
In response, Newcastle have brought in four young players: Aladji Bamba, Sean Steur, Bazoumana Toure and Ewen Jaouen.
Trust in the manager
Former Chelsea, Everton and Scotland winger Nevin believes the transfer policy is a necessary response to financial restrictions. "I can see why people worry for Newcastle but you either trust Eddie Howe or you don't," he told Betano Online Casino.
"Their previous method didn't work because the Champions League fatigue caught up with them and they ran out of personnel. It's a financial problem more than a football one."
He added: "They need to look at a different model. Rebuilding with younger, livelier players makes sense. Bill Shankly used to say, ‘make sure you sell them before the legs go’.
"Eddie's financiers haven't been allowed the big-name approach, so I'm actually quite excited about this rebuild. They've had to get rid of brilliant players, but they've put themselves in a better financial position. It could go the wrong way, but having a near-clean slate is interesting."
Further additions
Newcastle are aiming to add a goalkeeper, while they may need to replace Bruno Guimaraes if concrete interest from Arsenal emerges. The Brazilian is due to report for pre-season training on July 31.
