A new poll has revealed the top 10 UK cities most gripped by World Cup fever, with London leading the pack. The survey of 2,000 adults, commissioned by Free Bets and carried out via OnePoll.com, found that 80% of Londoners are watching or planning to watch a game, just ahead of Liverpool at 78%. Both cities far exceeded the national average of 68%.
London and Liverpool Lead the Charge
The research highlights a strong football culture in the capital and the home of Everton and Liverpool FC. Nationally, 21% of respondents said they will host or attend watch parties throughout the tournament. Londoners are also the most emotionally invested: 36% admitted they would cry if their country got knocked out, the highest percentage in any city.
Dominic Celica from Free Bets commented: “Football fever doesn’t hit the same everywhere, and in some cities, it completely takes over. It’s not a surprise to see London high up on the list given the rich football heritage in the city.”
Viewing Preferences and Work Disruption
When it comes to the ideal place to watch, 40% of Brits prefer home with family, while 20% like to watch alone. The pub remains a popular choice for 16%. The tournament has also caused significant disruption to work and personal plans: almost one in five (18%) have considered pulling a sickie or skipping work, and 13% have taken annual leave. A quarter have rearranged plans to catch a game, with 30% cancelling gym sessions.
Celica added: “The World Cup is one of the most captivating events on the sporting calendar, and when your team goes further in the tournament, it’s no surprise to see how willing people are to cancel plans. The kick-off times are presenting clear difficulties for those at work, with many resorting to booking time off or even pulling sickies.”
National Pride and Emotional Reactions
The survey also probed national pride: 32% would rather see their country win the trophy than their own club, and 18% have cried over a national team victory or defeat. If their country were to win, 15% would be “absolutely ecstatic,” yet 2% said they don’t want their country to win at all.
Least Interested City
At the other end of the scale, Bristol showed the least interest, with only 58% planning to watch the tournament.
