Spain face Portugal in a massive World Cup 2026 last-16 clash today, with Nico Williams and Yeremy Pino named on the bench after injury scares. La Roja cruised to a 3-0 win over Austria in the round of 32, but carried two injuries from the group stage victory over Uruguay.
Injury concerns for Spain
Williams suffered a groin issue in the feisty 1-0 win over Uruguay in Mexico, while Pino sustained a sprain to his shoulder ligaments. A team statement released after the match read: “Both injuries are of moderate severity, and their recovery progress will determine their availability.” Head coach Luis de la Fuente feared both players could miss the rest of the tournament, while Williams described his re-injury as “one of the worst days of my life”.
Both players were pictured back in Spain training on Sunday, but their fitness for involvement remains uncertain. De la Fuente has been frustrated to be without Williams, a star of Spain’s run to Euro 2024 glory two summers ago, and quality rotation option Yeremy Pino of Crystal Palace.
Confirmed Spain XI
Barcelona superstar Lamine Yamal and Atletico Madrid’s Alex Baena keep their places on the flanks against Portugal, with Mikel Oyarzabal through the middle. The Real Sociedad striker has as many goals as appearances so far at this World Cup. De la Fuente has settled on a firm back five, with Marc Cucurella and Pedro Porro lining up either side of Pau Cubarsi and Aymeric Laporte. Unai Simon keeps his place in goal. Dani Olmo and Pedri both struggled to impose themselves against Austria but retain their spots.
Spain XI: Simon, Porro, Laporte, Cubarsi, Cucurella, Baena, Rodri, Pedri, Olmo, Yamal, Oyarzabal
Subs: Raya, E. Garcia, Pubill, Grimaldo, J. Garcia, Llorente, Merino, Ruiz, Gavi, Zubimendi, Torres, Pino, Williams, Munoz, Iglesias
