First-Half Dominance
South Africa dominated the opening 40 minutes, scoring two tries through wingers Makazole Mapimpi and Cheslin Kolbe. Mapimpi crossed in the 12th minute after a break from centre Damian de Allende, while Kolbe added a second in the 34th minute following a lineout drive. Fly-half Handre Pollard converted both tries and added a penalty to give the hosts a 14-6 lead at the break. England's points came from two penalties by captain Owen Farrell.
England's Second-Half Fightback
England came out strongly after halftime, with Farrell kicking two more penalties to reduce the deficit to 14-12. The visitors then took the lead in the 58th minute when flanker Tom Curry scored a try from close range after sustained pressure. Farrell's conversion made it 18-14 in favour of England. However, South Africa responded with a Pollard penalty in the 65th minute to make it 18-17, setting up a tense finish.
Late Drama
With five minutes remaining, England were penalised for offside at a ruck, and Pollard stepped up to slot the winning penalty from 40 metres out. England had one last chance to snatch victory but lost possession in the final play. "It was a tough game, but we showed character to come back and win," said South Africa captain Siya Kolisi. "We knew England would be physical, and we had to dig deep."
Impact on Championship Standings
The win moves South Africa to second in the Rugby Championship standings with eight points, two behind leaders New Zealand. England remain in third place with four points. The two sides will meet again next Saturday in Cape Town in the return fixture.
