Scottie Scheffler erupted in frustration after sending his tee shot into the rough on the 17th hole during the final round of The Open at Royal Birkdale on Sunday. The world number one could not believe his eyes as he sliced the ball, beginning a dramatic sequence on the penultimate hole.
"What?! Why can...how does that even happen? The ball's slicing. One bounce! One bounce!" he shouted in disbelief, according to Sky Sports coverage.
Recovery Attempt Goes Awry
Things did not get easier from there as he attempted to play his recovery. Taking a metal wood, Scheffler tried to navigate the mound he found himself behind but could only send the ball towards the hospitality tent. After that wayward effort, Scheffler was forced to mark up a new ball and take a provisional drop. He found the crowd of fans on his second attempt. Unable to find his original ball, a lengthy conversation with a rules official and his caddie Tedd Scott followed.
Birdie Despite Chaos
Despite the chaos, Scheffler, oozing class on the green, was still able to record a birdie on the par-five 17th hole, keeping him in contention in the final round of the major championship.
