Marcelo Bielsa will lead Uruguay out at what could be his final tournament as manager this summer, and they open their campaign against Saudi Arabia today. The Argentine, who has been in charge of the South American side since 2023, led Uruguay to a comfortable qualification, with historic wins over Brazil and Argentina en route. They also held England to a 1-1 draw back in March, where they deserved to win at Wembley Stadium.

Uruguay, captained by Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde, will be hoping to avoid a similar upset this time around. Bielsa’s big omission from his World Cup squad was former Barcelona and Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, who has not made the cut despite his goalscoring form in Major League Soccer for Inter Miami.
