Cristiano Ronaldo scored at a record sixth World Cup as Portugal thrashed Uzbekistan 5-0 in Houston on Tuesday night. At full time, he screamed a four-word message into a TV camera: 'I'm back, I'm back.'
Record-Breaking Goal
The 41-year-old forward netted Portugal's third goal in the 58th minute, becoming the first male player to score in six different World Cup tournaments. His previous appearances were in 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022.
Ronaldo's goal came from a close-range finish after a cross from Bruno Fernandes. The strike put Portugal 3-0 ahead, with earlier goals from João Félix and Bernardo Silva.
Dominant Performance
Portugal dominated the match from start to finish, controlling possession and creating numerous chances. Diogo Jota added a fourth in the 72nd minute, and substitute Gonçalo Ramos completed the scoring with a header in the 85th minute.
The win gives Portugal a strong start in Group H, after a disappointing draw in their opening match against Morocco. The team now sits top of the group with four points.
Ronaldo's Reaction
After the final whistle, Ronaldo approached a pitchside camera and shouted 'I'm back, I'm back' multiple times, according to broadcast footage. The message appeared to be a response to critics who questioned his form and selection for the national team.
Portugal coach Roberto Martínez praised Ronaldo's contribution: 'He is a leader, a legend. His record speaks for itself. We are delighted to have him in the squad.'
What's Next
Portugal's next match is against Ghana on Saturday. A win would secure their place in the knockout stages. Ronaldo is expected to start again as he chases more records.
