Olwethu Makhanya has refused to return to Philadelphia Union, with the Rangers target accusing the MLS side of 'breaking promises' to him over his future. The centre-back is in demand this summer, with sources across the pond stating that the Union have turned down a bid from an unnamed Belgian club for the 22-year-old, who was part of the South Africa squad at the World Cup.

It has also been claimed that Derek McInnes' Rangers have made contact over a potential deal for the defender, although talks are said to be at an early stage. According to The Athletic, Makhanya has now gone AWOL after venting his fury at seeing a move to Europe blocked. Earlier this week, reports emerged that Philadelphia Union threw out an offer worth upwards of €3.5 million (£3 million) for his services.
Makhanya's Career and Contract
Makhanya joined the MLS outfit from South African team Stellenbosch F.C. three years ago and helped them win the Supporters' Shield in 2025. He is under contract at Subaru Park until December 2027. The defender's frustration stems from the club's refusal to facilitate a move to Europe despite what he perceives as broken promises.
Rangers' Defensive Reinforcements
Ibrox boss McInnes has already bolstered his defensive ranks with the loan capture of England international defender Ben Godfrey from Atalanta. He is closing in on another signing, with Partizan Belgrade captain Vanja Dragojevic set to join Rangers in a deal worth £4.6 million. A member of the Serbian midfielder's family has also taken to social media to confirm that the transfer is all but officially confirmed by the Govan side.

The Light Blues also retain an interest in long-term target Jens Hjerto-Dahl. The Norway U21 star has gone public with his willingness to join Rangers, but Tromso are reportedly standing firm on their £7.5 million valuation of the player, with English Championship side Cardiff City also keen.
