Multiple horse deaths have been reported following a devastating fire that destroyed a barn at Saratoga Harness Track in New York state. The blaze broke out early on Tuesday, with estimates of equine casualties ranging from seven to 31 horses.
Firefighters Respond to Early Morning Blaze
Emergency services were called to the track, situated less than two miles from the renowned Saratoga thoroughbred racecourse, at 2:30 a.m. after a fire ignited in a barn on the backstretch. The barn was completely destroyed by the flames.
Track Owner Confirms Casualties
Saratoga Casino Hotel, the track owner, reported that 18 horses were stabled in the barn. In a statement, they said, "Despite the rapid response of emergency personnel and on-site staff, at least seven horses perished in the fire. No human injuries have been reported." The statement also noted that security team members rescued several horses before the fire became unmanageable. Firefighters contained the blaze and prevented it from spreading to nearby structures. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
GoFundMe Campaign Raises Funds
A GoFundMe campaign quickly raised more than £15,000, with initial reports suggesting 18 horses had died, while later accounts put the number at 31. Jessica Hallett, who started the appeal, wrote: "In the very early morning hours of June 16th, a fire started in one of the barns at the Saratoga Harness Track. Employees were just arriving to feed and start cleaning stalls when they saw the fire and alerted the connections of those horses. Unfortunately, the fire spread too fast and too quickly, claiming the lives of 18 horses inside the barn." She added that donations would help horsemen who lost not only their loved ones but also their entire stables and livelihoods.
Community Support and Condolences
David O'Rourke, president and CEO of the New York Racing Association (NYRA), expressed condolences, stating: "Horse racing in New York is a community of hard-working people linked together by a shared commitment to the horses. This morning's tragic fire at the Saratoga Hotel Casino Harness Track will have a profound impact on that community, and NYRA extends our condolences to all those affected by this loss. NYRA stands ready to support our neighbors at Saratoga Hotel Casino with any assistance they may need at this time."
