Messi Calls Yamal a Global Star Ahead of World Cup Final

Lionel Messi has described Lamine Yamal as "one of the best in the world right now" ahead of an historic meeting between the two in the 2026 World Cup final. Argentina and Spain will face off on Sunday, marking the first time the two stars share the same pitch at the same time.

Messi's Praise for Yamal

Speaking at a fans' event on Friday, Messi said: "He's one of the best in the world right now. I wish him luck because his success will be Barcelona's success. We'll try to keep him from playing at his best. Spain has a great team, not just him."

Messi added: "He's a tremendous player - a global star. He's 19 years old and has his whole career ahead of him. I wish him the best, but we'll give it our all to ensure he doesn't become champion this time."

Viral Baby Photo Revisited

Remarkably, Messi and Yamal first met nearly two decades ago. A photo showing a then 20-year-old Messi holding baby Yamal in a blue bathtub in the away dressing room at Camp Nou resurfaced in 2024 when Yamal's father posted it on social media ahead of the European Championship final. Messi commented: "That photo is incredible. The fact that we're both playing in the World Cup now is crazy."

Yamal's Injury Concerns

Yamal faces a race against time to prove his fitness for Sunday's final. The Barcelona star did not take part in training in New Jersey on Thursday and wore a bandage on his left thigh after limping following the semi-final win over France. His availability remains uncertain as Argentina prepares to face a strong Spanish side.
