Charles Leclerc secured victory at the British Grand Prix in a race that ended under safety car, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli saw his title lead shrink after a mechanical failure dropped him to 16th. The Ferrari driver held off Mercedes' George Russell, who finished second, and Lewis Hamilton in third. Lando Norris placed fourth for McLaren.
Antonelli's Mechanical Woes
Antonelli had been chasing Leclerc for the lead in the final third of the race when his front-left wheel shield broke after hitting the kerbs at Copse, causing severe steering issues. He pitted but the problem persisted, forcing another stop that left him in tenth. A five-second penalty for track limits, incurred while struggling with handling, dropped him to 16th.
Safety Car Drama
With four laps remaining, Max Verstappen crashed at high speed at Stowe, bringing out the safety car. Verstappen, who had been closing on the leaders, exclaimed over team radio: “Fuck this car, unbelievable.” Leclerc and Hamilton pitted for fresh tyres, but Russell stayed out, moving to second. The safety car was expected to come in but did not, ending the race behind it—a disappointing finish for Hamilton, who lost a position.
Leclerc's Triumph
Leclerc celebrated his first British Grand Prix win and his first victory since the 2024 US GP. The win is a significant achievement for Ferrari after a difficult 2025 season. It also demonstrates Ferrari's ability to challenge Mercedes, following Hamilton's recent win in Spain.
Championship Implications
Russell reduced his gap to teammate Antonelli to 25 points, while Hamilton moved to 32 points behind the Italian. The result tightens the championship battle. Earlier in the race, Antonelli passed Hamilton at Copse on lap 11 and set after Leclerc, who was four seconds ahead. Hamilton served a five-second penalty for a jump start during his pit stop.
Thrilling On-Track Battles
Hamilton and Russell engaged in a wheel-to-wheel duel for fourth place, exchanging positions through Copse and Maggotts. Russell held the place despite a reported slow puncture, but was forced to pit a lap later, appearing to cost him dearly until Antonelli's issue changed the race's dynamic. The crowd was denied a grandstand finish, but the championship is now finely poised.
