Jürgen Klopp has confirmed he is in negotiations to become the head coach of the German national football team, stating that he is "more than recharged" and ready to return to management after leaving Liverpool in 2024. The former Liverpool boss is the German Football Federation's (DFB) preferred candidate following Julian Nagelsmann's resignation on Friday, four days after Germany's shock World Cup last-32 penalty shootout loss to Paraguay.
Klopp's Recharge and Readiness
Klopp, who left Liverpool citing a lack of energy, told German broadcaster Magenta TV: "About two years ago I stopped at Liverpool and said I lacked the energy for another job or for another year with Liverpool. Since then I'm more than recharged, I'm ready." He confirmed the DFB had approached him as part of their succession planning after Nagelsmann's departure.
Germany's Struggles and Need for Change
Germany have failed to reach the last 16 of the men's World Cup for three consecutive tournaments and have not won a knockout match since the 2014 final against Argentina. Klopp described German football as being "at a turning point" and emphasised the need for fundamental changes. "Now we need to change things fundamentally. Whether that's me in the end or whoever it may be, that doesn't change the fact that changes are necessary," he said.
Contract and Talks Timeline
Klopp is currently under contract as head of global soccer for Red Bull's network of clubs, which he said would require time for negotiations. He stressed that intensive discussions with the DFB are needed to agree on key points for transforming the team's fortunes. The DFB statement named Klopp as the only coach who had "signalled his willingness" to take over.
Nagelsmann's Resignation and Klopp's Analysis
Nagelsmann resigned after Germany's early World Cup exit, with Klopp calling him an "excellent coach" and absolving him of blame for the team's deeper problems. Klopp had been a high-profile pundit on German TV during the tournament, even conducting post-game interviews with Nagelsmann on the pitch. After the Paraguay loss, he initially said he had not considered the Germany job, but has now entered formal talks.
Klopp's Legacy and Future
Klopp won the Premier League and Champions League during his eight-year tenure at Liverpool, leaving in 2024 due to exhaustion. His potential appointment as Germany boss would mark a major shift for the national team, which has struggled to recapture its 2014 glory. The DFB and Klopp are expected to continue discussions in the coming weeks.
