Coco Gauff survived a dramatic match against Danielle Collins at the Canadian Open in Montreal, winning 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(2) despite hitting 23 double faults and 74 unforced errors. The victory was Gauff's first since winning the French Open in June.
The top seed was two points from defeat but rallied to win in two hours and 55 minutes. Gauff had lost her opening matches in Berlin and Wimbledon after her French Open triumph.
Collins, a former top-10 player, also struggled with errors, hitting 13 double faults and 80 unforced errors. The match featured nine breaks of serve.
“I was practicing well and I don't think I transferred it today, but hopefully I got my bad match of the tournament out of the way,” Gauff said. She added, “maybe if I cut [the errors and double faults] in half, it would be a quicker match for me.”
Gauff will next face Veronika Kudermetova, another former top-10 player, who defeated Olga Danilovic.
