Airdrieonians have completed the signing of former Hearts defender Henry James on a permanent contract, the club announced on Saturday. The 19-year-old left-back impressed during a trial period and becomes the Diamonds' fifth summer addition as they build for the upcoming League One campaign.
Impressive Trial Earns Contract
James, an Englishman who came through the youth system at Nottingham Forest, has been training with Airdrie since pre-season began last month. He featured in recent friendlies, including last week's 1-1 draw with Elgin City, and convinced manager John Rankin to offer him a deal.
"I can't wait to get started," James told the club website. "I think it's the time where I need to be introduced to first-team football properly. I obviously had a little loan spell in January at Peterhead, so I think it's time to get some proper first-team games under my belt."
Manager's Verdict
Rankin praised James's attitude and work ethic. "Henry has been with us since the first day of pre-season. His work ethic and contribution to games have been impressive, which has demonstrated how hungry he is to succeed," the Airdrie boss said. "He's a young lad who got a bit of experience of playing at this level last season, and I'm looking forward to seeing him grow at the club and improve as a player."
Fifth Summer Signing
James joins striker Dapo Mebude, midfielders Matty Yates and Ewan Simpson, and defender Sam Fisher as new arrivals under Rankin this summer. The club is aiming to build a competitive squad for the 2026-27 League One season.
