Former FC Porto footballer Usalifa "Ussa" Jos Indi, 26, died after collapsing while jogging alone in Fafe, Portugal, on Monday July 20.
A passer-by alerted authorities at around 9pm after Indi reportedly felt unwell and collapsed unconscious on a road in Armil, Fafe. Emergency responders found the midfielder unresponsive and pronounced him dead at the scene in the Retorta area despite attempts to revive him.
No signs of crime
Authorities detected no signs of a crime and believe he suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest. Indi was not carrying identification, so his identity was only established on Tuesday morning. A post-mortem examination is yet to determine the exact cause of death.
Football career
Born in Guinea-Bissau on December 3, 1999, Indi held dual Guinean and Portuguese nationality. He joined FC Porto's youth academy at 18 and played for the club's Under-19 team during the 2017/18 season, making three appearances.
The central midfielder also played for Cesarense, União de Leiria, Valadares Gaia, FC Pedras Rubras, Vitória de Sernache, Vila Meã and Macedo de Cavaleiros. His only spell abroad was with Estonia's Harju JK, who announced his signing in March 2023.
Indi remained part of Harju JK's first-team squad last season but several injuries prevented him from playing. The club and player mutually agreed to end their partnership in June this year, and Indi returned to Portugal.
Tributes
Harju JK said: "The entire club will remember Ussa as an exceptionally kind and warm person, who always gave his all on the pitch and was a role model for the whole team through his hard work and commitment."
Cesarense described him as "a person of great humility and dedication."
