England Face DR Congo in World Cup Knockout Test
England face their first do-or-die test of the 2026 World Cup when they take on DR Congo in the knockout stages in Atlanta on Wednesday, July 1. Thomas Tuchel's preparations have been disrupted by an injury curse that has sidelined three right-backs before the group stage even ended. Despite topping Group L with a 2-0 win over Panama, England's defensive options are limited.
A new simulation by EA Sports FC 26, reported by The Mirror, predicts a dramatic 7-1 victory for England, but not without a nightmare start. The simulation also forecast an identical 7-1 win against Panama, which turned out to be much closer in reality.
Injury Curse Hits Right-Backs
Jarrell Quansah became the third right-back to suffer an injury during the win over Panama, joining Tino Livramento and Reece James on the sidelines. The simulation anticipated that Tuchel would start Djed Spence at right-back rather than shifting Ezri Konsa or Trevoh Chalobah out of position.
Other changes included Declan Rice returning to the starting XI in midfield, Marcus Rashford retaining his wide role, and John Stones replacing Konsa alongside Marc Guehi in central defence.
Simulated Lineup and Match Events
The simulated England XI was: Jordan Pickford; Djed Spence, Marc Guehi, John Stones, Nico O'Reilly; Elliot Anderson, Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham; Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford, Harry Kane.
DR Congo took a shock lead in the 18th minute when Samuel Moutoussamy capitalised on a defensive lapse and a fumble by Pickford to score the rebound. However, Elliot Anderson equalised in the 28th minute with a solo effort, then scored again in the 38th minute after a pass from Harry Kane. Just before half-time, Kane converted a penalty after Aaron Wan-Bissaka was penalised for handball, making it 3-1.
Second-Half Dominance
In the second half, Kane scored another penalty in the 50th minute after a handball by Arthur Masuaku. Jude Bellingham then added a fifth in the 58th minute, and a sixth in the 71st minute after being set up by Kane. Marcus Rashford completed the scoring in stoppage time with a thunderous finish, sealing a 7-1 victory.
Tuchel substituted Spence for Konsa in the 70th minute, presumably to preserve his only available right-back for later rounds.
Reality Check
While the simulation predicts a comprehensive win, England's actual group stage performance was less convincing. Fans would likely trade a goal bonanza for a straightforward, injury-free victory at this stage of the competition.
