Novak Djokovic has hit back at sceptics who doubted the severity of his Australian Open injury by posting an MRI scan on social media. The Serbian star withdrew from his semi-final against Alexander Zverev after losing the first set, having suffered a torn muscle in his upper leg during his quarter-final victory over Carlos Alcaraz.
John McEnroe was among those who questioned the legitimacy of the injury while commentating, saying: 'This isn't the first time we've seen this routine. Don't be fooled.' In response, Djokovic shared the scan on X with the caption: 'Thought I’d leave this here for all the sports injury 'experts' out there.'
When asked about McEnroe's remarks, the 24-time Grand Slam champion said: 'To be honest, I haven’t seen these comments so I can’t say more. What I can say is that it’s always easier to judge and criticise than to understand. It’s a lesson I’ve learned in life.'
The 37-year-old now faces an uncertain recovery period and has been left out of Serbia's Davis Cup qualifier against Denmark. He also hinted at possible retirement, saying of a return to Melbourne Park: 'There is a chance. Who knows? I'll just have to see how the season goes.'
