Novak Djokovic's first-round opponent at Wimbledon, British wildcard Jacob Fearnley, has admitted he is feeling the nerves but is 'super excited' to face the 24-time Grand Slam champion. The 22-year-old, who recently won his first ATP Challenger Tour singles title, will make his Grand Slam debut on Centre Court.
Fearnley, from Edinburgh, acknowledged the intimidating prospect of facing Djokovic but said it is the biggest match of his career. 'It's going to be a little bit intimidating, but it's a match that I'm super excited for,' he told the Metro. 'Just to be able to share the court with a player like that will be really special.'
Djokovic, meanwhile, admitted he knows little about Fearnley and will need to 'do his homework' ahead of the match. The Serbian also noted the challenge of playing a British player at Wimbledon, where the home crowd is likely to be behind Fearnley. 'You never like to play the British at Wimbledon,' Djokovic said. 'But I'm looking forward to it.'
Fearnley, who has watched countless videos of Djokovic, conceded that there appear to be few weaknesses in the Serb's game. He plans to simply enjoy the experience and see what happens, rather than overthinking tactics. 'I'm going to just try and enjoy it, put my game out on the court and see what happens,' he said.
