Andy Burnham Pledges to Back Rugby League from No 10 if PM
Burnham Vows to Champion Rugby League as Prime Minister

Andy Burnham has pledged to champion rugby league from the highest office if he becomes Prime Minister, stating the sport "deserves more" recognition and investment. The newly elected MP for Makerfield is widely expected to succeed Sir Keir Starmer as Labour leader and Prime Minister.

Background in Rugby League

Burnham has a strong background in the sport, having served as president of the Rugby Football League and being a lifelong supporter of Leigh Leopards. On Saturday, July 4, he attended Super League's Magic Weekend at Everton's Hill Dickinson Stadium, where he spoke to Sky Sports about his ambitions for the sport.

"I am a former president of the Rugby Football League and to have that honour was huge for me," Burnham said. "I would back this sport from the highest office. Sir Lindsay Hoyle does that with great distinction as Speaker of the House of Commons and perhaps the two of us can form a pretty powerful axis, if it does come to pass, for the sport."

Call for Greater Investment

Burnham emphasized the need for more support at all levels of rugby league. "This sport does need more. It’s a brilliant spectacle but I think rugby league deserves more," he said. "We saw Sir Kevin (Sinfield) get his rightful recognition but where is rugby league’s recognition more broadly? Where’s the investment in the grassroots facilities? I’d like to see more backing for the sport at every single level. You’ll have two very powerful backers if all of the plans are fulfilled."

Personal Connections

Burnham has strong links with the Leigh club, having previously served as the town's MP. He is also an Everton season-ticket holder. Speaking ahead of Leigh's clash with Warrington, he expressed his joy at seeing Leigh play at Everton's stadium. "It does my heart so good to see Leigh playing in my home ground, Everton Football Club. These are the two greatest loves of my sporting life. This is massive for me," he added.
