Wirtz admits 'annoying' night as Germany held by Greece
Wirtz 'annoying' admission after Germany draw with Greece

Liverpool attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz admitted he suffered an "annoying" evening as Germany captain after Jurgen Klopp's side were held to a goalless draw by Greece in the UEFA Nations League.

Wirtz followed his goal and assist in last week's win over Serbia with another impressive showing in the clash against the Greeks in Thessaloniki on Sunday. Despite dominating possession and having 21 shots, Klopp's side failed to find a breakthrough, with the home team – which included Liverpool left-back Kostas Tsimikas in the starting line-up – holding out to ensure they remain second in Group 2 with two games remaining.

Wirtz on Germany's frustrating night

"We put a lot of pressure on, but didn't score the damn goal," Wirtz told German outlet RTL after the game. "That's annoying. Overall, we can be satisfied with how we played – there were a lot of good things. We mustn't forget that we've only been together for a week."

"We really wanted the win, we didn't – but of course, not everything was bad." Wirtz was captaining Germany for the first time after being handed the armband by former Liverpool boss Klopp.

Van Dijk's 100th cap and Koumas' Wales defeat

In the group's other game, Virgil van Dijk earned his 100th cap for the Netherlands as he skippered them to a 2-1 win over Serbia to move ahead of Greece on goal difference. Ryan Gravenberch also started while Jeremie Frimpong remained an unused substitute.

Elsewhere, Lewis Koumas made his second successive start for Wales but couldn't prevent them from falling to a 1-0 home defeat to Denmark in their Group 4 meeting. Craig Bellamy's side have now lost three of their four games in the competition this season.
