Wimbledon Star Apologises for Abrupt On-Court Interview

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has apologised for his abrupt behaviour during a post-match interview at Wimbledon, which went viral on social media. The 27-year-old Spaniard, seeded 22nd, gave terse answers to a reporter from Movistar+ after his first-round straight-sets victory over Juan Manuel Cerundolo on Court 17. The clip was viewed over 500,000 times on X.

Exhaustion and Injury Blamed for Short Interview

Following his win over Cerundolo, which took two hours and 16 minutes in sweltering heat, Davidovich Fokina replied “Bad” when asked how he felt, then said “My whole body hurts” when pressed further. The interview ended abruptly after the reporter wished him luck. At the time, it was suggested that fatigue from his ATP win in Mallorca just four days earlier contributed to his brief responses.

Public Apology After Second-Round Win

After advancing to the third round with a straightforward 6-3, 6-0, 6-3 victory over Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan, Davidovich Fokina took the opportunity to make amends. “I just want to say sorry for the interview two days ago,” he said. “My back was hurting, I had a panic attack. I just wanted to go to the locker room.” The reporter accepted the apology without any ill feeling.

Equalling Best Wimbledon Run

With his second-round win, Davidovich Fokina has equalled his best performance at Wimbledon, having never progressed beyond the third round in seven attempts since 2018. He now faces another Hungarian opponent, Marton Fucsovics, for a place in the fourth round. A potential last-16 match could see him against Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, who must first beat qualifier Michael Zeng.
