Will Ferry out of Dundee derby as Goodwin confirms groin injury

Dundee United boss Jim Goodwin has confirmed that Will Ferry will miss Saturday's Dundee derby. The influential defender missed the Celtic game with a groin injury and it sparked the conspiracy theories that he was on the verge of a Tannadice exit.

Ferry had a scan, which revealed a minor issue in that area. He will sit out Saturday night's Tannadice clash with Dundee.

Scan shows minor issue

Goodwin confirmed: “The scan showed a little bit of a nick in his groin, so the game's probably going to come to soon for Will, unfortunately.

“Probably (one game), yes. There’s a little bit of soreness in a wee bit.

“So obviously the scan confirmed what we thought anyway.

“Lots of different things flying about the place, but the boy has hardly missed a game for us in two years and people again jump into conclusions.

“But as I said, the scan did highlight there was something there, but nothing major.”

No transfer update

Goodwin also added there was nothing new on the transfer front with Ferry. He knocked back a move to Sigma Olomouc earlier in the window. Since then Anderlecht have held talks and Celtic are also watching the situation closely. United have also offered Ferry a new deal, but there has been no update on that front either.

He said: “Not that I'm aware of, no. I'm usually the last one to know if that is the case, but no, nothing new.”

Derby rivals and injury support

Dundee have signed Bobby Wales on-loan from Swansea City. He is a player Goodwin knows all about from his time at Kilmarnock. Goodwin also stepped across the divide to provide words of support for Dundee skipper Simon Murray who suffered an ACL injury at Aberdeen last week.

He admitted: “Bobby Wales from his time at Kilmarnock obviously came through the academy there and had good success and obviously earned that move to Swansea. It hasn't quite worked out for him down in England, but it is a hell of a step up. to go and play for Kilmarnock and then go and play in the Championship regularly is a big, big step.

“I think it's a good step up for him. He's a player that knows the league. It's not a gamble. It's a player that I think comes in and takes the place of Simon Murray who unfortunately picked up that terrible knee injury last weekend.

“Obviously I know there's a rivalry there between the two clubs and a sense of support and everything else, but we wish Simon Murray the very best in terms of his recovery.”

Miller Thompson also missed out but midfielder Dylan Tait returns after his Premier Sports Cup suspension.
