An ITV commentator was left puzzled by a VAR decision during the World Cup Group B match between Switzerland and Qatar. The game, held on Saturday afternoon in San Francisco, saw a controversial moment in the first half.
Penalty Awarded After VAR Review
Switzerland received a penalty in the 14th minute when Qatar goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada fouled Remo Freuler while attempting to clear the ball. Breel Embolo converted the spot kick, but the build-up sparked debate, with suggestions that Freuler was offside before the foul.
ITV's Lee Dixon expressed his confusion, stating he believed the penalty would be overturned due to offside. "There's no doubt about it being a penalty, my arm did go up for the offside," Dixon said during the broadcast. "For the run, just there, he's offside. This won't count. He just wandered off. The referee can't see that so points to the spot."
