Brendon McCullum has pledged to remain as England head coach despite the shock retirement of captain Ben Stokes, stating that 'the project isn't finished yet.' After England's loss to New Zealand on Monday in Stokes's final international match, McCullum confirmed his commitment to a contract running through the end of 2027. 'From my point of view, my enthusiasm and commitment to English cricket has never wavered, and that's certainly the case now. I'm excited about the opportunity of where this cricket team can get to,' he said.
Stokes Endorses Brook as Captain
Stokes declared his '100% support' for vice-captain Harry Brook to take over the captaincy, despite no official decision being imminent. He also indicated he did not support the appointment of Joe Root as interim captain during the second Test of the series. 'There's a reason he was asked to be vice-captain of this team,' Stokes said of Brook. 'You are asked to be vice-captain for a reason, and I was vice-captain under Joe for a long time. It's the natural progression.'
Strained Relationship with McCullum
Stokes's once-strong bond with McCullum became strained during the Ashes series defeat. Notably, Stokes informed Brook and Root of his retirement decision on Saturday night, but McCullum only learned on Sunday morning, minutes before the squad. McCullum tried to persuade Stokes to stay, but was shut down in a brief conversation. McCullum recalled: 'He said, Baz, I'm done. I was like, slow down, let's talk. He said, honestly, I'm done. I felt he was very definitive.'
McCullum on Next Captain
McCullum said the identity of the next Test captain requires careful consideration, noting 'many good candidates' in the squad. He emphasized preserving the spirit Stokes brought: 'He was an inspirational captain, a true leader of men. Those traits need to stay within the dressing room.'
Stokes's Future Plans
Stokes had planned to play for Durham in the Metro Bank One Day Cup starting July 21, but said those plans would 'probably change now.' He expressed gratitude to his county: 'Without them, I wouldn't be sat here talking about all this stuff now. It's a case of going back and having a bit of fun playing, but also repaying some of the stuff they have given to me.'
