Kyuden Voltex have confirmed that Saimoni Vunilagi has died at the age of 26 from suspected heatstroke. The 'devastated' rugby club, who play in the Japanese League's second tier, shared the tragic news on Friday morning.
Training incident
Vunilagi, of Fiji, was taken to hospital on Monday after a training session. A statement from the club read: "After team practice on Monday, August 3, 2026, Saimoni displayed symptoms consistent with severe heatstroke. He was transported to a medical facility for treatment, but despite the best efforts of the medical team, he sadly passed away."
The statement continued: "The players, staff, and all team associates are devastated by this sudden news. Although Saimoni had only recently joined Kyushu KV, his generous spirit and powerful style of play had raised high hopes for his contributions in the upcoming season. We humbly pray for the repose of his soul and extend our heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family."
Recent move and tributes
Vunilagi joined Kyuden Voltex last month, having moved on from Japan Rugby League One outfit, Tokyo Sungoliath. A statement from the league read: "We express our heartfelt condolences upon receiving the news of the passing of Saimoni. We offer our deepest condolences to the bereaved family and all those involved."
A minutes silence was held in tribute to Vunilagi on Saturday, ahead of Japan's 35-32 loss to Australia. During that fixture, two of Vunilagi's former Suntory Sungoliath team-mates in Kanji Shimokawa and Naoto Saito started under Eddie Jones.
Heatwave context
As per Aljazeera, temperatures hit a high of 35C in Fukuoka on Monday. It comes as parts of the country have saw the mercury tip 40C in recent weeks, with Japan reigstering its hottest summer on record just 12 months ago.
The publication also claims that almost 18,600 people were taken to hospital for heatstroke between July 20 and July 26. As per the fire and disaster management agency, 45 of those were pronounced dead on arrival.
