Antonia Ruzic, the Croatian tennis player who was scheduled to face Emma Raducanu at Wimbledon, discovered the British No. 1's withdrawal through an Instagram story late at night. Ruzic, ranked 61st in the world, was preparing for bed after dinner with her team when she saw Raducanu's post announcing her exit from the tournament on the eve of their scheduled first-round match on No. 1 Court.
Last-Minute Changes and Victory
Ruzic immediately contacted the player relations team to confirm her status. Within 30 minutes, she learned she would face lucky loser Darja Semenistaja on Court 17, not before 1 p.m. Despite the disappointment of being moved off a show court, Ruzic won her Wimbledon debut 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. She expressed mixed emotions: "It's bad news because I wanted to play Court 1, maybe against her. But today is good news because I won."
Raducanu's Decision and Future Matches
Ruzic sympathized with Raducanu, acknowledging the difficulty of withdrawing in front of home fans. "I hope Emma gets well... it's the best decision that she made, if she was not fit to play," Ruzic said. Raducanu, the 30th seed, had been slated to play on Monday afternoon. Ruzic now faces 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, with world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka a potential third-round opponent, offering a chance to compete on a show court.
