Gerrard's Rangers Return May Force Liverpool Legends Exit

Steven Gerrard faces a ticking clock as his potential return to Rangers could force him to pull out of a glamour Liverpool Legends match in Malaysia. The former Rangers boss is among the leading candidates to replace current manager Danny Rohl, who is considering an offer from RB Salzburg.

Rohl's Potential Exit Opens Door for Gerrard

Danny Rohl, the current Rangers manager, is weighing up an offer to become the next boss of RB Salzburg. The Austrian club is confident they can meet the financial demands to prise the 37-year-old away from Ibrox. Record Sport understands that Andrew Cavenagh and the Ibrox board are pushing ahead with drawing up a shortlist of candidates to replace Rohl if an agreement is reached with Red Bull.

Shortlist Includes Gerrard, McInnes, and Muscat

Gerrard is expected to be among the leading candidates, with Derek McInnes and Kevin Muscat also highly admired by the decision-makers at Rangers. Chief executive Jim Gillespie, speaking at the North American Rangers Supporters' Association's annual convention, was asked if Gerrard and McInnes would be among the contenders. He stated: "Those are the type of names that will be on the shortlist."

Any call to Gerrard to seal a blockbuster return to Ibrox would mean aborting an upcoming match for Liverpool Legends in The Far East. The 46-year-old attended the press conference to promote the fixture with a Manchester United select on Saturday, October 3, but intimated a looming decision over his managerial future would rule him out. Speaking last month, Gerrard said: "It's a fantastic event in a couple of months' time. I'm hoping to be available to come over to be a part of it. I should have a decision in two, three weeks."

Hearts Brace for McInnes Approach

Hearts boss McInnes, weeks after agonisingly missing out on the Premiership title, watched his star striker Lawrence Shankland head to Ibrox and now he could be asked the same question. The Edinburgh Evening News reports the Jambos are braced for a call from Ibrox as Cavenagh and Co seek a quick resolution.

Gerrard, who delivered the Premiership title in 2021, has been approached twice by Rangers before they appointed Russell Martin and Rohl, but insiders in both camps had agreed to "leave the door open for the future." Now a third call to the Gerrard camp could be looming if Rohl exits Ibrox.
