Denver Hume has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 28, following a fractured skull and bleed on the brain sustained in a training collision in October.
The Ashington-born full-back graduated from the Sunderland AFC youth academy in 2018 and went on to make 84 appearances across all competitions for the Black Cats. After moving to Portsmouth in 2022 and joining Grimsby Town two years later, Hume signed a two-year contract with Fleetwood Town last summer.
His season and ultimately his career were cut short in October after what was described as an "innocuous" collision in training left him with a bleed on the brain.
Emotional retirement statement
Around 10 months on from the collision, Hume took to Instagram to confirm his retirement. He wrote: "I never thought I’d be writing this at the age of 28, but following specialist medical advice, my career as a professional footballer has come to an end."
"After suffering a fractured skull and bleed on the brain last season, I’ve spent the months since trying to process this and find a way back to doing what I love the most. Unfortunately that isn’t going to be possible and is something I’ve had to come to terms with."
He added: "It’s difficult to even put into words what football has meant to me. I joined Sunderland at the age of 8 and from that point dedicated my life to football, with one dream - to one day play for the first team. To achieve that dream and go on to make 84 appearances, make my Championship debut and play at Wembley is something I’ll always be incredibly proud of."
Gratitude and next chapter
Hume thanked everyone at the clubs he represented, writing: "I’ll always be grateful to everyone at the club who helped make this possible. Football has given me some unbelievable memories, representing Sunderland, Portsmouth, Grimsby and Fleetwood along the way."
He also acknowledged the challenges of his career: "Injuries, 5 different operations, injections and plenty of moments where I’ve had to pick myself up and go again. But I wouldn’t change my journey as that’s what’s shaped me into the person I am today and given me a different perspective of life."
He gave a special mention to Grimsby Town, saying: "A club that helped me fall back in love with football again at a time when I really needed it." He thanked every coach, staff member, teammate and supporter, as well as his family, girlfriend and those closest to him.
Hume concluded: "Football has been a huge part of who I am and all I’ve known, but I’m excited to discover what life looks like beyond being a footballer. I’m incredibly grateful and proud of the journey I’ve had in the game, and I’m looking forward to seeing what the next chapter brings. Thank you."
Former clubs and team-mates respond
Several of Hume's former clubs wished him well. Sunderland AFC wrote: "Wishing you nothing but the best, Denver," while Grimsby Town added: "Wishing you the very best for the future, Denver."
Former team-mates also sent messages, with Luke O'Nien writing: "Thank you for everything legend," and Charlie Wyke saying: "Enjoy the next chapter mate, great career to be proud of."
