A fight broke out between the benches of England and Mexico during their round of 16 match, following a red card challenge by England defender Jarell Quansah. Pundit Alan Shearer claimed that punches were thrown in the ensuing melee.
Shearer Reports Punches on Touchline
Speaking on BBC's coverage, former England striker Alan Shearer said: "It's all going off on the touchline, they're scrapping, they're punching, they're doing whatever because the Mexican bench they think it was a terrible tackle from Quansah. It wasn't, I thought I timed it really well, but he had to go in, and he had to win it, but that bench didn't agree with the tackle, and they were all up causing chaos with the England bench as well."
Quansah Sent Off After VAR Review
The incident occurred in the second half when Quansah made a high challenge on a Mexican player. Replays showed he caught his opponent high, prompting a VAR review. After reviewing the footage, the referee showed Quansah a straight red card, reducing England to 10 men.
Impact on England's World Cup Campaign
The red card and subsequent brawl could have significant implications for England. Quansah will now miss the quarter-final if England progress, and the team may face disciplinary action from FIFA over the bench confrontation. The match remains ongoing, with England fighting to hold on with a numerical disadvantage.
