Dog pitch invasion halts Scotland's clash with North Macedonia

A dog pitch invasion brought Scotland's Nations League clash with North Macedonia to an abrupt halt in bizarre scenes in Skopje.

Match halted by canine intruder

Scotland boss Sebastien Pocognoli was eyeing his first win since taking charge, after a draw against Slovenia was followed by a heavy loss to Switzerland. The Belgian coach saw his side get off to the perfect start as Sassuolo striker Kieron Bowie lashed home his first goal for his country.

Shortly after, the game came to a sudden stop when a dog managed to make its way onto the pitch at the Todor Proeski National Arena, leaving players to attempt to remove the puzzled pooch from the field. Sebastiján Herera looked to calm the dog as it strolled around the field, and it eventually moved towards the touchline.

BBC cuts coverage

The BBC Scotland team then cut away coverage, with commentator Liam McLeod admitting: "You don't normally see that type of pitch invasion, of the canine variety." He then noted: "It has been retrieved."

Former Scotland international James McFadden joked: "It was a very placid dog. Just out for a casual stroll."

The incident brought a brief halt to the match before play resumed.
