Four of Wales's most celebrated rugby stars have traded the try line for the coffee bean, launching a successful new business venture in their retirement.
From Grand Slams to Coffee Blends
Lee Byrne, the former Wales full-back who was instrumental in the 2008 Grand Slam victory, has teamed up with former international teammates James Hook, Shane Williams, and Mike Phillips. Together, they have launched FabFour Coffee, a business born from their shared love of coffee and a desire to maintain their close friendship after hanging up their boots.
The quartet, who earned a collective 308 Welsh caps and made 10 appearances for the British and Irish Lions, officially started the company in 2020. The name 'FabFour' pays homage to the nickname they were given during their playing days with the Ospreys, Wales, and the Lions.
More Than Just a Business
For these former athletes, the venture was about more than just commerce. Byrne explained in 2020 that the project was crucial for preserving their bond. "To be honest, it was as important for us to have a reason to meet up and keep our friendship going as much as starting a business," he said.
He added, "When we finished playing, we went from spending all our time together to going our separate ways, and we just wanted that shared interest to pull us back together again."
The company also supports their official charity partner, Velindre, adding a philanthropic element to their enterprise.
A Growing Venture with a Personal Touch
Since its launch, FabFour Coffee has expanded its offerings to include cakes. Although Mike Phillips stepped down from his role in 2023, the business continues to thrive.
The 'Fab Four' even boast their own distinctive coffee blend, named 'Lee's XV' in honour of Byrne. It is described as "a fantastic blend of the best coffee of the season, well balanced with undertones of apricot and nectarine, a vibrant lime acidity and dark chocolate finish."
Byrne, who scored 10 tries in his 46 caps for Wales before retiring in 2015 due to a shoulder injury, now uses his Instagram page to keep coffee enthusiasts updated on their latest developments.
