In a dramatic fall from sporting glory, former rugby union player Sam Turner has been handed a prison sentence for a vicious assault that left his victim with life-altering injuries. The 31-year-old's descent into violence coincided with a devastating cocaine addiction that took hold after his professional rugby career came to an abrupt end.
From Rugby Pitch to Prison Cell
The promising athlete, who previously played for clubs including Macclesfield RUFC, saw his life spiral out of control following his departure from the sport he loved. Turner's addiction to cocaine escalated dramatically, culminating in the brutal attack that would see him facing justice at Chester Crown Court.
The Night That Changed Everything
On the fateful evening of October 28, 2023, Turner launched an unprovoked attack on Matthew Lofthouse outside a pub in Macclesfield. The court heard how Turner punched Mr Lofthouse to the ground before repeatedly kicking him in the head while he lay defenceless on the pavement.
The assault left the victim with multiple facial fractures, including a broken eye socket and cheekbone, requiring extensive surgery to reconstruct his face using metal plates. Medical professionals described the injuries as potentially life-changing.
A Life in Turmoil
Defence counsel Nicholas Clarke painted a picture of a man whose life had dramatically unravelled. "This is a tragic case of a young man who had everything going for him," Clarke told the court. "He was a professional rugby player with a bright future, but when that career ended, he turned to cocaine and his life spiralled downwards."
The court heard how Turner's addiction had cost him his relationship, his home, and ultimately his freedom.
Justice Served
Judge Simon Berkson delivered a stern sentence, stating: "This was a sustained assault where you continued to attack Mr Lofthouse after he was on the ground. The injuries were serious and will have a long-term impact on the victim."
Turner was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison for section 20 grievous bodily harm and criminal damage for kicking the victim's phone during the altercation.
