Play was suspended during the Magic Weekend clash between St Helens and Wigan Warriors after Nathan Lowe appeared to lose consciousness following an injury. Lowe had been delivering a commanding performance in only his second Super League appearance for the Cherry and Whites. However, his afternoon came to an abrupt end just before the half-time whistle at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Incident Details
The young winger was bundled into touch by a number of Saints players and as they cleared away, it became instantly evident that Lowe had sustained a serious-looking leg injury. Medical staff sprinted to his assistance and eventually managed to get him upright to escort him towards the tunnel. However, as they guided Lowe along the touchline, the Wigan man appeared to faint.
Paramedics rushed to his side and helped him back to his feet, but Lowe appeared to lose consciousness once more and had to be laid down close to the touchline. Referee Chris Kendall was ultimately compelled to bring play to a standstill owing to Lowe's condition, and several minutes passed before the final moments of the first half could be concluded, with Lowe placed on a stretcher and carried down the tunnel.
Club and Broadcaster Statements
Following his withdrawal, Wigan Warriors posted on X: "After a short stoppage whilst Nathan Lowe receives medical treatment, the winger is stretchered off the field." St Helens stated: "Nathan Lowe sadly has to come off due to injury. We hope the young player is on the mend ASAP." On the match being halted, they added: "After a stoppage to ensure Lowe is taken off the field safely, we start again, no penalty after the tackle on report."
Broadcaster Sky Sports confirmed that Lowe experienced a sudden drop in blood pressure as he was helped off the pitch, which caused him to pass out.
Injury and Match Outcome
At the point of his departure from the field, the scoreline stood at 6-8 in favour of St Helens. It has also been suggested that Lowe is suspected to have suffered a ruptured hamstring. Daryl Clark and Ethan Havard had both been substituted for head injury assessments shortly before the incident involving Lowe took place. Despite the Lowe injury blow, Wigan came from behind to win the clash. Earlier in the day at the Magic Weekend, Leeds Rhinos battered Bradford Bulls 50-16.
