Emma Raducanu's former coach, Francisco Roig, has swiftly re-entered the tennis coaching arena, taking on a new role with ATP Tour player Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. This development comes just weeks after Roig and Raducanu ended their six-month partnership in January, following the British number one's second-round exit from the Australian Open.
Raducanu's Coaching Changes and Recent Performance
Raducanu, currently ranked world number 24, has faced a challenging start to the 2026 season. Her collaboration with Roig, who previously worked with Rafael Nadal, showed initial promise last year but concluded abruptly after her early departure from Melbourne. This split marks the ninth coaching change for Raducanu since her stunning US Open victory in 2021, sparking headlines and debate about her training regime.
Former British number one Laura Robson has defended Raducanu regarding the frequent coaching shifts. "I think we make such a big deal out of the coaching situation," Robson stated. "As long as she is feeling happy on the court, as long as she's confident out there then that's half the job done. That's what coaches try and bring out in you when you do have one."
Roig's New Assignment with Mpetshi Perricard
Roig has been observed working with Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard at Indian Wells, where the unseeded Italian is preparing to face Poland's Kamil Majchrzak in the first round. Mpetshi Perricard, ranked world number 54, has experienced a downturn in form over the past twelve months, despite a breakout season two years ago that saw him reach a career-high ranking of 29th in February 2025.
Roig brings significant experience to this new role, having contributed to Grand Slam successes while working alongside Rafael Nadal's uncle, Toni Nadal, during the Spaniard's dominance. Prior to his stint with Raducanu, Roig also coached Matteo Berrettini, adding to his credentials in guiding top-tier players.
Raducanu's Current Endeavors and Apparel Deal
Meanwhile, Raducanu is set to compete at Indian Wells, beginning her tournament in the second round. Seeded 25th, she will also participate in mixed doubles action on Wednesday, partnering with Elena-Gabriela Ruse against third-seeds Kateina Siniaková and Taylor Townsend.
This event marks Raducanu's first on-court appearance since switching from Nike to Uniqlo, following in the footsteps of tennis legend Roger Federer by joining the Japanese casualwear brand. The 23-year-old will have considerable input in designing her on-court outfits, making this her second major clothing deal after her long-term partnership with Nike.
