A pub in Plymouth has unveiled what it claims to be the biggest St George's flag in the country ahead of England's opening match in the World Cup. The Three Lions meet Croatia in Dallas at 9pm on Wednesday, June 17, and one boozer is marking the occasion with a massive flag draped across its entire roof.
Massive Flag Installed at Windmill Chargrill Pub
The Windmill Chargrill pub in Plymouth, Devon, has unveiled the flag, which measures a whopping 50ft by 20ft. It was installed by scaffolders, and pictures show it taking up the whole roof of the pub. In a statement, the patriotic boozer confirmed: 'We are now ready for the 2026 World Cup.'
A number of punters have reacted to the flag, with one writing on social media: 'Keep it up all year.' A second put: 'Love to see the flag,' while a third wrote: 'Love it.'
Tradition of Displaying the Flag
The Windmill, dubbed a pub and sports bar on Facebook, has displayed the flag during previous tournaments, and pubgoers are pleased to see it return this year. It was originally the idea of former long-term landlord Darren Luxton, who left the pub last year. He previously said: 'As far as I'm aware it's the biggest flag in the country, so we'll see if anyone can beat it.' After the flag unveiling this year, one fan said: 'Now that's when football starts.'
Social Media Reaction
The pub shared pictures of the flag on Facebook and wrote: 'FLAG IS NOW...UP. We would like to say a huge thank you to Dane & His Team this morning for putting Windmill's well-known England flag. The Windmill Team really appreciate Dane & The Team for giving up their part of the weekend to help us. We are now READY For 2026 WORLD CUP. Watch her at The Windmill.'
A number of people have commented on the post. Ronald Dawe said: 'Brilliant Windmill pub. Come on England.' Michell Clarke echoed: 'Come on England.' Rainy McCullough put: 'Brilliant', while Mark Brown said: 'LOVE IT.' Matthew Pollard also said: 'Brilliant' and Mark Woods wrote: 'Come on England, nice flag.'
England's World Cup Campaign
Thomas Tuchel's England begin their campaign against Croatia on Wednesday night before they play Ghana in Boston next Tuesday, June 23. Their final group game is against Panama in New Jersey on Saturday, June 27.
