Northampton Saints secured a dramatic 49-41 victory over Castres in the Champions Cup on Friday night, booking their place in the quarter-finals. The hosts overcame a sloppy start and ill-discipline from the visitors to emerge victorious in a high-scoring encounter.
Castres winger Christian Ambadiang was the standout performer in the early stages, scoring two tries in the first 11 minutes. However, his influence waned after he was shown a yellow card for a professional foul, conceding a penalty try. Castres were further reduced to 13 men when Guillaume Ducat also saw yellow, but Northampton failed to capitalise immediately, dropping the ball repeatedly.
Northampton finally found their rhythm, with Danilo Fischetti, Josh Kemeny, and Tommy Freeman all crossing the line. Castres hit back through Tyler Ardron and Enzo Hervé, but the hosts extended their lead through George Furbank and Archie McParland. Fraser Dingwall sealed the win with a late try before Ambadiang completed his hat-trick for Castres.
The victory ensures Northampton, last year's losing finalists, will face either Bath or Saracens in the quarter-finals. Despite their defensive frailties and handling errors, the Saints' attacking firepower proved decisive in a match that saw 14 tries scored.
