Former England rugby captain Lewis Moody has issued an emotional rallying cry, urging the sporting world to support ex-teammate Ed Slater's battle against Motor Neurone Disease. The Leicester Tigers legend revealed the profound impact of Slater's diagnosis on the rugby community, drawing powerful comparisons to the late, great Doddie Weir's courageous fight.
From Teammates to Torchbearers
Moody, who played alongside both Slater and Weir during his illustrious career, described the moment he learned of Slater's diagnosis as "devastating." Speaking exclusively about the Gloucester lock's situation, Moody emphasised how Slater has shown remarkable strength in facing the progressive neurological condition.
"Seeing Ed confront this with such dignity reminds me so much of Doddie's approach," Moody reflected. "There's that same determination to fight, to raise awareness, and to make a difference for others facing this cruel disease."
The Doddie Weir Legacy Continues
The rugby community remains deeply affected by Weir's passing in 2022, but Moody believes his foundation's work provides a crucial blueprint for supporting Slater and other MND sufferers. The My Name'5 Doddie Foundation has raised millions for research and patient support since its inception.
"What Doddie achieved in his final years was extraordinary," Moody stated. "He transformed the conversation around MND and showed us all how to face adversity with courage and humour. Now we must channel that same energy into supporting Ed and his young family."
Rugby's United Front Against MND
Moody highlighted how the rugby fraternity has consistently demonstrated its capacity for solidarity when faced with such challenges. From fundraising matches to awareness campaigns, the sport has repeatedly shown its compassionate side.
"Rugby is more than just a sport - it's a family," Moody emphasised. "When one of our own faces something like MND, we come together. The response to Ed's situation already shows that same spirit that supported Doddie is very much alive."
The former flanker concluded with a powerful message to fans and fellow professionals alike: "We cannot let this disease win. By supporting Ed, donating to research, and keeping MND in the public consciousness, we honour Doddie's legacy while fighting for Ed's future."
