McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has admitted he would "consider" signing Max Verstappen, but only if Formula 1 regulations were changed to permit a third car. The four-time world champion has been linked with a move from Red Bull to the Woking-based squad after his management team initiated talks, though those discussions reportedly did not progress far.
Stella's Conditions for a Verstappen Move
Speaking about the possibility of signing Verstappen, Stella said: "We are talking about a four-time world champion, it would be always a fascinating opportunity. But we [would] need to introduce the third car. So you don't have to talk to me, we have to take a higher political level and when we will be in condition to do so. Then, we will consider this option."
Stella's comments come amid ongoing speculation that Verstappen could leave Red Bull. McLaren chief executive Zak Brown has made it clear he is happy with the current driver line-up of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, both of whom have long-term contracts. Despite this, rumours have persisted that Piastri could swap places with Verstappen.
Verstappen's Father Spotted at McLaren Motorhome
The speculation intensified after Verstappen's father, Jos, and manager Raymond Vermeulen were seen leaving the McLaren motorhome at the Belgian Grand Prix. Photos of the encounter circulated on social media, fueling talk of a potential deal. However, Stella's remarks suggest that any move is unlikely without a regulatory change.
While a Verstappen-McLaren partnership in F1 seems improbable in the near future, the Dutchman will collaborate with the team in another capacity. Verstappen confirmed he is working with 15-year-old McLaren Racing junior Dries van Langendonck, providing support through his management team and simulator expertise.

Verstappen stated: "I'm impressed by the steep progress that Dries has made during his career and the talent he has shown both in karting and in his first steps in open formula racing. After getting to know Dries and his family, I'm convinced that all the signs for becoming a great future driver are there. Therefore, my management team and I will, with the simulator support of Verstappen Racing Pro Simulation, assist Dries to reach the ultimate goal of Formula 1."
Van Langendonck added: "Verstappen Racing provides the support to take me to the next level in my career and marks an important step on my path to Formula 1, as the ultimate goal. To be able to learn from such an experienced driver as Max and to have the support of his professional management team, alongside that of McLaren Racing, is really amazing. I am very grateful. I will keep pushing to maximise my performances while doing what I like best: racing."
