England rugby legend Lewis Moody has shared the heartbreaking details of his final visit with former teammate Rob Burrow, describing the devastating impact of Motor Neurone Disease on the Leeds Rhinos icon.
The Emotional Farewell
Moody, who played alongside Burrow for England, visited his friend in December, just months before the rugby league great lost his battle with the cruel disease. "It was tough to see," Moody confessed, his voice filled with emotion. "Seeing someone who was so vibrant, so full of life, being trapped by this illness... it stays with you."
Living in Rob's Shadow
The former Leicester Tigers flanker revealed how the experience has given him a new perspective on his own health concerns. "When I wake up with a sore back or stiff legs, I think of Rob," Moody shared. "What I'm experiencing is nothing compared to what he went through. It really puts things in context."
A Legacy of Awareness
Despite the tragic circumstances, Moody emphasised the incredible legacy Burrow leaves behind. Through his very public battle, supported tirelessly by friend and former teammate Kevin Sinfield, Burrow transformed understanding of MND across the nation.
"Rob and Kev have done more for MND awareness than anyone," Moody stated. "They've put it on the map, making people understand what this disease really does to individuals and families."
The Urgent Need for Research
Moody's powerful testimony comes as he prepares to run the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon this weekend, joining thousands of others honouring the rugby legend's memory. His words serve as a stark reminder of why continued research and funding for MND remains critically important.
"We cannot forget Rob's fight," Moody urged. "We have to keep pushing for better treatments, for a cure, for families facing this battle right now."
