Leeds United Dream Defence for Next Season with World Cup Star and New Goalkeeper
Leeds Dream Defence with World Cup Star and New Goalkeeper

Daniel Farke is understood to view improving the defence as Leeds United's top priority this summer, following a promising debut campaign back in the Premier League. The Whites secured their top-flight status comfortably, finishing 14th last season, but Farke is keen to avoid a second-season slump. Bolstering the defence is the club's primary focus, with active searches for a new goalkeeper, left-back, and centre-back.

Struijk's Departure Creates Urgency

The exit of Pascal Struijk to Brighton for an initial £18 million has accelerated the need for a centre-back. Leeds sanctioned the sale before 30 June to remain compliant with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). In a statement, Leeds said: "Last summer, the decision was taken to keep all players at Elland Road to give the club the best possible chance of Premier League survival, with the expectation that player sales would be needed to remain PSR compliant over a three-year accounting window ending June 30. The club's higher than expected 14th place finish and run to the Emirates FA Cup semi-final vindicated this decision, with the increased income and single sale of Struijk ensuring the club remains within PSR limits."

Struijk featured in 34 league matches last season and was instrumental in the club's survival bid. Even before his departure, another central defender was high on Leeds' recruitment list, following Farke's effective mid-season tactical shift from a back four to a 3-5-2 system.

Nico Elvedi: Ideal Centre-Back Target

Borussia Monchengladbach centre-back Nico Elvedi appears perfectly suited to Leeds' setup. The 29-year-old Switzerland international has impressed at the World Cup and offers physicality, leadership, and experience. Capable as a central anchor or on the right of a back three, Elvedi recorded 271 clearances in 33 Bundesliga appearances last season. Standing at 6ft 2in, he is built for the Premier League's physical demands.

According to the Mail, Leeds have already made contact with Monchengladbach to explore a deal for Elvedi, with a fee around €12 million (£10 million) likely sufficient. This represents superior value compared to other targets, such as Southampton's Shea Charles, for whom the Saints reportedly demand £30 million despite his contract having just one year remaining.

Goalkeeper Dilemma: Zion Suzuki Targeted

The final piece of Farke's defensive rebuild is a new goalkeeper, following Illan Meslier's departure and uncertainty over Karl Darlow. Japan international Zion Suzuki, who impressed at the World Cup, is a prime candidate. According to reports in Japan, Leeds have already reached personal terms with the Parma shot-stopper, with a transfer valued at approximately £25 million. A quick deal would resolve uncertainty over the number one jersey, with Darlow out of contract and undecided on his future.

Dream Defence for 2026/27 Season

The proposed dream defence for the 2026/27 season includes: Zion Suzuki (goalkeeper); Jayden Bogle, Joe Rodon, Jaka Bijol, Nico Elvedi, and Gabriel Gudmundsson.
