Roy Keane Firmly Rejects Michael Carrick as Permanent Manchester United Manager
Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane has delivered a blunt dismissal of suggestions that interim boss Michael Carrick should be appointed as Manchester United's permanent manager. This comes despite Carrick overseeing impressive victories against both Manchester City and Arsenal in his first two matches in charge.
Carrick's Impressive Start as Interim Boss
Michael Carrick took over managerial duties at Old Trafford following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, initially on a contract until the end of the current season. His tenure began spectacularly with a 2-0 derby victory over Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, followed by a 3-2 triumph against league leaders Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
Keane acknowledged the positive impact Carrick and his coaching staff have had on the squad, particularly noting the return of key players and improved focus. "Harry makes a good point," Keane said, referencing Harry Maguire's post-match comments. "They've got a lot of their players back now, it's a full group, they've got full weeks together and there's no other distractions. They can focus on the league form and they're producing."
Keane's Unwavering Position on Managerial Appointment
Despite these notable successes, Keane remained adamant that United require a more established figure for the permanent role. When pressed by fellow pundit Micah Richards about whether Carrick should be hired permanently given his immediate results, Keane's response was unequivocal.
"The job? You're being silly now," Keane retorted. "No, he's had two great performances but anybody can win two games. It's what he does until the end of the season. Even if they do get into fourth I still wouldn't be convinced he's the man for the job. Absolutely not. I still think they need a bigger and better manager."
Recognition Amidst Reservation
Keane did extend credit to Carrick for seizing the opportunity presented to him. "But, he's got the opportunity, what a chance it is for him and, do you know what, he's taking it so fair play to him," Keane conceded. The former United captain also praised the team's renewed confidence and momentum, suggesting that a top-four finish is now a realistic possibility if they maintain their current form.
The Manchester United hierarchy continues its search for a permanent manager, with Carrick's interim period providing both unexpected success and renewed debate about the club's long-term leadership direction.
