Sixty minutes before the third Test kick-off, Harpenden RFC is buzzing. Clubhouse manager Derek Wallace is busy cooking white pudding from County Mayo, unsure how many fans will turn up after crowds swelled to over 200 for the second Test. Outside, children play on the artificial pitch, a source of pride for the club.
Harpenden, a commuter town 35 minutes from London, has become a rugby union hotbed. Owen Farrell and Maro Itoje, both former Harpenden players, are among the club's alumni. Farrell, a local resident, is often seen practising goal-kicking on the pitch with his dog. The clubhouse displays a picture of Farrell lifting the Tom Richards Cup after the 2013 Lions series.
The club's rise began in the professional era when Saracens players and staff moved into the area. Farrell and Itoje, along with George Ford and Jack Singleton, attended St George's School. The under-16s team featuring Farrell and Ford was legendary, dominating all opponents. Itoje, initially more interested in basketball, was spotted by coach Stu Mitchell after a single ruck and persuaded to join the club.
Itoje's potential was evident early on. Mitchell recalls seeing him hit a ruck and comparing him to Richard Hill. Despite his size, Itoje was shy and polite, often bringing extra chicken to family BBQs. The club's referees remember Farrell's competitive nature, with one admitting he was too scared of Farrell's mother to send him off.
The third Test in Sydney sees Itoje off with a head injury and Farrell in the midfield. The match is tight and hot-tempered, but Harpenden's legacy is already secure. From a small club hosting pub rugby sevens, it has produced multiple Lions and international players, a testament to its nurturing environment.
