Steven Gerrard is reportedly interested in taking over at Wrexham as pressure mounts on Phil Parkinson, according to talkSPORT. The former Liverpool midfielder has not managed since leaving Al-Ettifaq in January 2025.
Wrexham surrendered a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 to West Bromwich Albion at the Racecourse Ground on Tuesday night. That defeat left the Red Dragons in 17th place after 10 Championship games, just three points from the relegation zone.
Parkinson under pressure after difficult start
Parkinson is said to be under increasing pressure following a difficult start to the season. Reports have emerged claiming the manager's position is being scrutinised, with Gerrard open to the role should a vacancy arise.
Former Burnley boss Scott Parker is another name expected to be considered, according to the same report. Parker left Burnley via mutual consent after the Clarets' relegation to the Championship was confirmed.
Wrexham's investment and Parkinson's confidence
Wrexham missed out on the play-offs by just two points in 2025/26 and made significant investment in their squad to renew a promotion push this season. The club signed Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson in an £8million club-record deal, in addition to Danny Imray, Joe Worrall, Callum O'Hare and others, spending more than £30m in total.
Parkinson remains confident he can lead the team to the playoffs. "I think last year, people kind of stir up a bit of negativity, which is just part and parcel of being a manager," he said. "We're just looking at the overall picture; we're one point ahead of where we were last year when we got ourselves going."
"We finished so close to the play-offs, and I'm very confident that we'll be able to achieve that again this season. We've just had a disrupted start, and of course when that happens criticism comes your way as a manager, it comes the players' way, and everybody is under the spotlight. But that's just the nature of football."
Gerrard's managerial record and unfinished business
Gerrard's managerial career began strongly as he led Rangers to a record-breaking Scottish Premiership title unbeaten in 2021. That earned him a move to Aston Villa, where he succeeded Dean Smith but could only lead the Midlands club to 14th in the Premier League before being dismissed the following season after two wins in 12 matches.
Before turning down the opportunity to return to Rangers in October 2025, Gerrard suggested he had unfinished business in management. "I'm enjoying family time and doing a lot of things that I haven't been able to do," he said. "Going to Grand Prix, doing exhibition games with ex-teammates and superstars, that type of stuff has been great."
"But there's a part of me that still feels that there's a bit of unfinished business in terms of wanting to go in and face another couple of exciting challenges. But I want a certain type of challenge. If in an ideal world they come available, I'll jump at them. If they don't, I won't go back in. I want to be at a team that's going to compete to win because I think that suits me better."
"I think certain jobs and certain clubs would suit my style and the way I like to go about it. But I've also got time now where I'm not in a rush, where I know the right people that are out there to make me a stronger and a better coach. They are the people I need to find. Because if I get the right match with those people around me, I know, and I've proved, I can be successful as a manager. And that's what I'm working on in the background now."
